The Van Der Burch Foundation in Cambrai, which has gone through various stages from its initial establishment as a boarding school to its transformation into a retirement home, has a captivating history dating back to François Van Der Burch (1567-1644). In 1616, he acceded to prestigious titles such as Archbishop and Duke of Cambrai, as well as Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and Count of Cambrésis. Deeply committed to the welfare of his fellow citizens, especially the destitute and orphans, Bishop Van Der Burch launched significant philanthropic initiatives in his diocese. In 1633 (or perhaps in 1631, according to some local sources), Bishop Van Der Burch founded the Maison Sainte-Agnès, also known as the Van Der Burch or Vanderburch Foundation. Designed by the architect Jean du Blocq, the establishment was originally a boarding school for the education of about a hundred disadvantaged young girls from Cambrai and Le Cateau-Cambrésis. The building, adorned with a sculpted portal by Jaspar Marsy, was distinguished by its relief Doric columns and its pediment displaying the founder's coat of arms. After the ravages of the First World War, only the walls of the establishment remained standing. A reconstruction led by architect Fernand Garet in 1928 allowed the site to be brought back to life. Transformed into a hospital during the Second World War, it was again struck by tragic fate when a fire ravaged the premises on March 11, 1983. Since then, the Vanderburch Residence, which has become a nursing home for dependent elderly people (EHPAD), has been attached to the Cambrai Hospital Center. This transition reflects the evolution of this emblematic place, once dedicated to the education of disadvantaged young girls, into a place of care and support for the elderly in the region.
